UIC Barcelona and the Master of International Cooperation Sustainable Emergency Architecture are co-organisers of the upcoming scientific conference on Risk, Resilience and Gender. The conference will take place in Rio de Janeiro on December 5-6, 2019 and is organized in partnership with CIAUD, Architecture Faculty of the University of Lisboa, PUC-Río (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro), Fluminense Federal University in Rio de Janeiro as well as the University of Beira Interior (Portugal) and the NGO Building 4Humanity, also based in Portugal.

Carmen Mendoza, director of our master program, will act as president of the congress and together with our assistant director Raquel Colacios will be part of the scientific committee.

The following focus areas will be covered:

  • housing and public space upgrading, with a special focus on the role of women within the community
  • urban rights and spaces of diversity: the role and claims of minority groups

  • the architecture of the Favela and its social, cultural and gender dimensions
  • climate change adaptation, risks and health geography and the use of new technologies
  • the role of the university in the construction of a more equal city

The conference is part of the Marielle Franco Community Design Award. One of the finalists shortlisted for last year’s edition of the award was the Olive Grove Recreation Area project, delivered by the Office of Displaced Designers– founded by our alumni Shareen Elnaschie and Kimberly Pelkofsky – and the Danish Red Cross. This participatory design and construction training project creates much needed social space on a site adjacent to Moria refugee camp on Lesvos.

Submissions of abstracts to attend the conference will be accepted until end of August. The summary of the abstract should be around 450 words and can be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish or English.
