The Aga Khan Foundation has announced a shortlist of 20 projects nominated for its 2013 architecture award. Projects include from traditional bamboo constructions and cultural restorations by local professionals to green high-rises, post-disaster housing and school buildings by high-profile architects like WOHA, Shigeru Ban and younger firms like MASS Design Group.

The already hefty prize–the world’s largest for architecture–was doubled US$ 1 million, the foundation announced just last year. Every three years, the prize awards projects that address the needs of Islamic societies and use local resources and appropriate technology in innovative ways.

Finalists will be selected and announced at a ceremony to be held in Lisbon in September 2013.
