Listen to Camillo Boano talk about his recent workshop with our students, in which he emphasized the importance of understanding critical theory in transforming and improving the development practice. Throughout the week, they analyzed and applied theoretical concepts in developing proposals for specific real-world informal settlement upgrading projects.

Camillo Boano is director of the MSc in Building and Urban Design in Development at The Bartlett Development Planning Unit, University College of London (UCL). His research interests are focused on urban development, contested urbanism, socio-spatial dialectics, design and urban transformations, shelter and housing reconstruction in conflicted areas, divided cities and post-disaster environments, and has over 20 years experience in research, design consultancies and development work in South America, Middle East, Eastern Europe and South East Asia.
