DPU60 Conference - Thinking Across Boundaries: Re-Imagining Planning in the Urban Global South

The Bartlett Development Planning Unit (DPU) UCL, is celebratings its 60th anniversary with a conference entitled Thinking Across Boundaries: Re-Imagining Planning in the Urban Global South that highlights a year of celebrations marking the DPU’s six decades of education, training, research, consultancy and knowledge sharing in urban and regional development policy and planning in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

The event held in London 2-4 July 2014, features a wide range of speakers drawn from academia, practice and community organisation, such as Camillo Boano that will be part of our jury this year, together with DPU staff, past and present, students, alumni, and others to deliberate on critical issues that guide the field of development planning. The themes of the conference are:

  • A future for urban development planning? Thinking across boundaries, with Julio D Dávila (DPU, UCL); Wilbard Kombe (Emeritus professor, Ardhi University, Tanzania); Enrique Ortiz (HIC, Mexico); Sue Parnell (African Centre for Cities, UCT); Aromar Revi (Indian Institute for Human Settlements).
  • A future for urban development planning? Approaches to urban inequality and informality in cities of the global south with Pushpa Arabindoo (Geography, UCL); Diego Carrión (formerly Municipality of Quito); Colin Marx (DPU, UCL); Omar Nagati (Cairo Laboratory for Urban Studies, Training and Environmental Research, CLUSTER); Sheela Patel (SPARC India and SDI).
  • Participation and contested practices in urban design and planning: rights, needs and urban imaginaries with Camillo Boano (DPU, UCL); Somsook Boonyabancha (Asian Coalition
    of Housing Rights); Barbara Lipietz (DPU, UCL); Jane Rendell (Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL); Jane Weru (Akiba Mashinani Trust).
  • Re-imagining socio-environmental trajectories of change: Radical practices and approaches to environmental planning and governance with Adriana Allen (DPU, UCL); Vanesa Castán-Broto (DPU, UCL); Lyla Mehta (IDS); Mark Swilling (University of Stellenbosch); John Twigg (Centre for Urban Sustainability and Resilience, UCL).
  • Forging new relationships in governance and planning: the state, market and society in a post economic crisis world with Peter Brand (Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Medellín campus); Antonio Estache (Université Libre de Bruxelles and formerly World Bank); Mike Raco (Bartlett, UCL); Lawry Robertson (Buro Happold); Michael Walls (DPU, UCL).
  • Urban Development and development assistance with Joan Clos, (Executive Director, UN-Habitat); Justine Greening MP, (UK Secretary of State for International Development, to be confirmed); David Satterthwaite (IIED and DPU, UCL).
  • Gender, intersectionality and socially just futures: Planning in an era of social polarisation with Gautam Bhan (Indian Institute for Human Settlements); Caren Levy

  • Positioning planning learning in an urbanizing world: the challenge of practitioner formation and the co-production of knowledge with Jo Beall (British Council); Alex Frediani (DPU, UCL); Liza Griffin (DPU, UCL); Bish Sanyal (MIT); Vanessa Watson (University of Cape Town).
