Our class of 2015-16 class traveled to India for their field trip with co-director Carmen Mendoza Arroyo and guest professor Reena Tiwari, where they took part in a five-day workshop on alternative building techniques at the Laurie Baker Centre for Habitat Studies in Kerala, and spent another four days in Mumbai visiting informal settlements like Dharavi and learning from best practices in community-led development with the organization Mahila Milan. Students were exposed to small-scale interventions and low-tech building techniques as well as broader urban issues like mass-immigration, informal settlements, land rights issues and slum-upgrading challenges.
